Makerere University Hands Over Historic Girls’ Hall to NEC for Major Renovation.
Makerere University on Friday formally handed over the CCE-Complex Hall of Residence to the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) for comprehensive renovation, marking a fresh chapter in the two institutions’ growing construction partnership.
The handover ceremony at the Makerere University campus was presided over by Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe and NEC Managing Director, Lt. Gen. James Mugira. NEC is expected to complete the works within twelve months.
Built in the 1950s, CCE-Complex Hall is one of Makerere’s female halls of residence and has deteriorated significantly over the decades, necessitating urgent structural and facelift refurbishment. Its prominent location adjacent to the University’s main gate makes the hall of residence particularly visible and, according to University officials, particularly significant for Makerere’s image as one of Africa’s leading institutions.
“This collaboration keeps construction investment within Uganda and has resulted in significant savings estimated in billions of Uganda Shillings,” Prof. Nawangwe said at the ceremony. He cited NEC’s recent delivery of Mary Stuart Hall, completed to the University’s full satisfaction as the benchmark the Corporation must meet and exceed on CCE-Complex Hall.
Lt. Gen. Mugira, in turn, welcomed the continued mandate and noted that NEC has now undertaken approximately four construction projects for Makerere University. “This track record serves as a strong motivation for the Corporation to continuously raise its performance and exceed client expectations,” he said.
The handover reinforces NEC’s expanding footprint in Uganda’s construction and infrastructure sector, as the government – affiliated corporation deepens its role in delivering large-scale institutional projects across the country.
