Defence & Internal Affairs Committee Inspects NEC Agro Ltd, Commends Progress Toward Food Security for the Forces.
NALI, Kyankwanzi – September 16, 2026– The Parliamentary Committee on Defence and Internal Affairs, led by Hon. Shafigah Wanyenya (MP, Bungokho North), yesterday inspected NEC Agro Farm in Kyankwanzi as part of its ongoing field oversight. The delegation was welcomed by Eng. Simon Terwane, General Manager, NEC Agro Ltd.
Eng. Terwane briefed the Committee on NEC Agro’s operations and its strategy to strengthen food and animal feed security for the forces and the public. This includes operations at the farms and the NEC Grain Mill in Kigimba, which the Committee visited a day earlier.
He disclosed that NEC Agro manages 3,869 acres of maize monocrop farms in Kyankwanzi (3,229 acres) and Katuugo (640 acres), with Kyankwanzi currently expanding by an additional 1,218 acres.
The farm employs data-driven, mechanized and climate-adapted agronomic practices to unlock productivity.
The tour sparked engaging discussions on milling and “farming with ekibaro”. Hon. Wanyenya was impressed by the decent crop despite harsh weather and commended NEC Agro for mastering the entire maize value chain — from farm to plate.
“Kyankwanzi Farm offers many lessons for large-scale commercial maize farmers,” she said. She urged NEC to share its technologies with local farmers to boost food security.
The Committee pledged to support NEC’s expansion to all four regions by mobilizing at least 5 square miles of land per region, a step toward establishing a National Food Reserve.
Eng. Terwane thanked MODVA, MAAIF and the UPDF leadership for their strategic guidance.
Also on the Committee were Hon. Sarah Namulondo (Buyende District Woman MP), Hon. Mukiibi Eriasa (Butambala), Hon. Wokuri Geoffrey (Bungokho South), and Hon. Maj Gen Joseph M. Ssemwanga (UPDF Representative). The tour was coordinated by Mr. Mike Mabonga, Assistant Commissioner for Reintegration, Resettlement and Production at the Directorate of Veteran Affairs.
Also present were Mr. Hassan Asiimwe, Chief Accountant; Mr. Norman Asaba, Farms Manager; Mr. Edmond Chiviru, Mill Plant Manager, and other senior NEC Agro Ltd officials.
